This marble panel illustrates a characteristically Venetian amalgam of Byzantine details within a gothic architectural framework. By the end of the 13th century Venice had adopted a cosmopolitan Mediterranean architectural imagery with various European, and a few Islamic elements, blended into ecclesiastical decoration in a unique and creative manner.
